Introduction
Located west of Syria and Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank are some of the world’s most contested lands. The West Bank, situated between Israel and Jordan and bordering the Dead Sea, holds historical significance, with Jericho being one of the world’s oldest cities.
Since Israel’s formation in 1948, Palestinian life has been marked by conflicts, leading to mass displacement. Sixty-one percent of Palestinians live in exile, with only five million remaining in the region.
The Gaza Strip and West Bank have a complex history, from Ottoman rule to British Palestine. Violent confrontations between Jewish and Arab communities escalated, leading to the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. After the Six-Day War in 1967, both territories came under Israeli military occupation, resulting in high unemployment, poverty, and limited access to essentials.
Palestinian Christians face persecution from radical Islamists and Israelis, while their dwindling numbers reflect a challenging environment. The hope for peace and reconciliation remains amidst the strife, a prayer for all.
