Introduction
Libya is a land of stunning contrasts, from the Sahara Desert to ancient Mediterranean cities. It has a rich but tumultuous history.
Home to 6.5 million people, its ancient heritage reflects Greek, Roman, and Ottoman influences.
Despite abundant oil wealth, nearly a third of Libyans live in poverty. The 2011 fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi promised democracy but instead plunged the nation into violent divisions, exacerbated by militia capture of oil ports and the Islamic State’s presence.
Libya is now one of the world’s most dangerous places for Christians. With 97% of the population practicing Islam, sharing the Gospel with Libyans is illegal, and the few remaining believers face extreme persecution. Missionaries are arrested, and even foreign Christians must worship discreetly. Most have fled due to violence, with the 2015 beheading of 21 Christians by the Islamic State hastening their exodus. However, Libyans abroad are eager to return and share their faith, using radio, satellite television, and the internet. Bibles and Christian materials remain in high demand.

Pray for Christians being persecuted
Libya is ranked #3 on the 2024 World Watch List published by Open Doors.
Libya is effectively a lawless land where native and migrant Christians face extreme danger. With no effective government, Islamic extremists and organized crime groups both wield power. They target, kidnap, and even kill Christians.
If a Libyan from a Muslim background becomes a Christian, they are likely to face intense pressure and abuse from their community, or worse. It is supposedly legal to convert, but this law is ambiguous and often abused or ignored.
